1 Introduction
*************

SMU-Setup helps you to edit the START.SET file required by /Start Me
Up!/ or also DirUp in the simplest and most comfortable manner without
having to know anything about its construction. Special attention was
paid to ensure intuitive and simple operation. The program was cleanly
incorporated in GEM (my thanks here to Christian Grunenberg for his
EnhancedGEM library).

You don't know what /Start Me Up!/ is? /Start Me Up!/ offers a "Start"
button for TOS & MagiC similar to that found in Win95. It is obtainable
in all good mail boxes or from the same source where you also obtained
SMU-Setup.

SMU-Setup for /Start Me Up!/ offers you the possibility to comfortably
drag files via Drag & Drop to a SETUP-file, and to create the menu to
suit your wishes without having knowledge about the construction of
/Start Me Up!/ SETUP files.

2 System requirements
************************

The absolute essentials for SMU-Setup is a TOS-compatible operating
system with at least 0.5 MB RAM.
For sensible working futher recommendations are MagiC, a desktop that
understands the AV-protocol, ST-Guide and naturally /Start Me Up!/ by
Thomas Much.

TRANSLATOR'S NOTE: For the correct display of tables in this text (but
/not/ in the program), a font containing the IBM-stye line-drawing graphics
symbols (such as MYBLUE) should be used. Other fonts, like the Atari system
font or the MAC16 font from Harlekin give legible but confusing results.

3 Installation
***************

Installation of SMU-Setup is very simple. First install /Start Me Up!/
(if you have not already done so). Copy the SMUSETUP.ENG folder
extracted from the archive to any desired place on any partition of your
hard disk. Copy the files SETUP.HYP and SETUP.REF to the GUIDES folder
of ST-Guide.

Make sure that the following environment variables are set (normally
they are set in MAGX.INF):

  $HOME (see "Program start") (e.g. #_ENV HOME=C:\USER)

  $STGUIDE (see "Online-help") (e.g. #_ENV STGUIDE=C:\ACCS\STGUIDE.ACC)

  $STARTSET (see "Program start")
   (optional, e.g. #_ENV STARTSET=C:\USER\DEFAULTS\START.SET)

In the 'Options' dialogue you should then locate /Start Me Up!/, so that
the 'Test' function works properly.

Note that a START.SET file has to be present, as SMU-Setup does not
itself create such a file. But a START.SET file is always included with
the /Start Me Up!/ and SMU-Setup packages.

After the installation and a restart of the computer you should call
SMU-Setup and enter the path of SMU-Setup in the appropriate place, or
alter the existing entry to your path (see "New object/Alter object").

4 Registration
****************

SMU-Setup when started requests input of a registration key, which was
available from the author after sending him a small appreciation (say a
postcard, sweets, photos of pretty women, contribution etc).
Until a valid key is input, a registration dialogue appears when the
program is started, and every 45 seconds a dialogue appears reminding you
that you should send me at least a small appreciation!
Due to the miserable response (does a postcard really cost the earth?)
SMU-Setup is now only a demo version, namely saving is not possible
until registration has been accomplished. So you have the opportunity to
test SMU-Setup and then to decide whether the program is worth the
trouble of sending a small apreciation.
After registration SMU-Setup works without restrictions.

For the address see under Contact (note that several people have
reported recently that they have been unable to obtain a reply).

TRANSLATOR'S NOTE: As the author has now announced that he has stopped
distributing keys, a suitable key and associated user name is included
in the KEY folder of the archive.

5 Program start
****************

When starting SMU-Setup, the file START.SET will be searched for first
in the path given in the $STARTSET environment variable (which specifies
the START.SET location), then in $HOME\DEFAULTS\. If it was not found
there, or if a SHIFT key was held down, a file selector appears in which
one can choose a START.SET file. Once this has been read in correctly,
the main SMU-Setup dialogue appears.

*Note:* If the $STARTSET environment variable is defined but left empty
of filled with nonsense, the file selector will appear automatically at
every program start. The $STARTSET environment variable has a higher
priority than $HOME, i.e. if it is defined, $HOME\DEFAULTS\ will not be
evaluated.

6.1 Drag & Drop
===============

SMU-Setup offers the possibility of configuring a START.SET file via
Drag & Drop. For this, with a suitable desktop that either understands
the AV-protocol or MiNT-Drag & Drop, one just has to drag a file or
folder to SMU-Setup's main dialogue. SMU-Setup itself recognises whether
it is dealing with a file or folder. This calls up a mainly
preconfigured dialogue (see "New object/Alter object") for inserting new
objects. This object will then be inserted, if possible, at the position
of the mouse pointer. Drag & Drop in the time-start manager is also
possible. For this, just drag the desired file to the time-start window.
The time will be entered automatically as 00:00 o'clock.

The program-internal Drag & Drop permits a simplified configuration of
the START.SET file. For this, click on one of the three icons (MENU,
FILE/FOLDER or SEPARATOR). A rectangle now appears in the object window,
which indicated the object to be inserted. The horizontal cursor shows
the position where the object will be placed. The internal Drag & Drop
can be aborted with the right mouse button, otherwise everything will
proceed as for external Drag & Drop.

6.2 Alter object
================

With the right mouse button one can alter an entry. For this the same
dialogue appears as for 'New object' (see "New object/Alter object").

6.3 Alter object order
======================

The object order in the main dialogue's object window can be altered
simply by clicking on the object to be moved, holding down the left
mouse button, dragging it to its destination and releasing the button.
A horizontal "cursor" appears as an aid, showing the position where
the object will be moved to.

6.4 Keyboard control
====================

SMU-Setup offers extensive keyboard operation. All buttons that can be
operated from the keyboard contain an underlined character. If one
presses the corresponding key together with ALTERNATE the button will be
selected as if clicked on.

Furthermore are following key combinations available:

         ͻ
          *Key* *Function*

                     Table 1: Keyboard functions

*Note:* '#' before the hotkey denotes numeric keypad!

All other keys are passed on to the AV-Server.

6.5 Online help
===============

The online help makes use of ST-Guide. It can be installed as a desk
accessory, in which case it will be used automatically. Otherwise it
will be searched for via the STGUIDE environment variable. If neither
the accessory, the environment variable or ST-Guide itself is present,
then the help cannot be called and a corresponding error message appears.

7.1 Main dialogue
=================

The main dialogue is the anchor-point of SMU-Setup, from which you can
reach all functions.

The dialogue subdivides into five areas:

  1. The *Object window*. Here you can control the build-up and the
order of the objects. The operation and the logical structure
resembles a directory structure. Sub-menus in /Start Me Up!/ are
      handled here like folders.

Menus or sublevels are marked with a '' in front of the menu
entry. A double-click with the left mouse button opens this
level and the name of the level appears in the top bar as an
          inverted line.

Clicking on the '' symbol at far left of the top window bar
next to the inverted line moves back by one level and displays
the name of this level in the inverted line.

The '' symbol at the right next to the inverted line of the
top window bar selects all entries in this level.

A click with the right mouse button on a object allows one to
alter the name of this object (see "Alter object").

A single click with the left mouse button selects an object,
which one can then remove with the 'Delete' button. If one
keeps the mouse button pressed, can one move the object under
the cursor. To place the object, just release the mouse button.

The font in the object window can be altered with a Drag &
          Drop font selector (e.g. Thing).

  2. With *Active Setup* one can select one of up to five loaded Setups
in a popup. Here the first entry is fixed as the standard Setup of
/Start Me Up!/. In the 'Options' dialogue four further Setups can
be defined, which can then be edited simultaneously.

  3. You will find the *Tools* next to the object window at the very top.
The icons can be dragged to the object window. The 'New Object'
dialogue appears (see "New object/Alter object"). When it has been
completed, the object will appear at the position the icon was
     dragged to.

  4. The *Function buttons* are located in the centre next to the object
window. One can call up the most important functions with them.
     These are, in detail:

'Test' (see "Test") for testing the START.SET

'Save' to save the START.SET file

'Delete' (see "Delete") to delete the selected entries

'Copy'/'Insert' (see "Copy/Insert") for managing the clipboard

'Flags' (see "Flags") for setting the /Start Me Up!/ switches

'Timestart' (see "Time-start") for calling the time-start
          manager

'Options' (see "Options") for setting various options

'Statistix' (see "Statistics") to display various statistics

  5. The *Remaining buttons* are located at the bottom next to the
     object window.

'Info' (see "Info") for calling the copyright dialogue

'Quit' (see "Quit") for leaving SMU-Setup

7.2 New object/Alter object
===========================

With this function you can /create/ and /alter/ all the display- and
menu-elements of the menu. /Start Me Up!/ at present offers the possibility
of managing (sub-)menus, files and folders. A separator (separating line)
can be inserted to improve the appearance and for logical subdivision into
sections.

This dialogue will also be called if you drag a file from a desktop that
understands the AV-protocol or MiNT-Drag & Drop (e.g. Thing or Gemini) to
the SMU-Setup main window (see "Main dialogue"). In this case all the
fields about which information is available will already be filled in.

SMU-Setup recognizes automatically the difference between a file and
a folder. With the former, the filename will be entered automatically as
the proposed menu line. With folders you always have to fill in this field
yourself.

The Dialogue offers following elements:

*Menu:* A sub-level or a menu is to be created.
You only have to add the name of the menu in the menu entry
               field.
In colour resolutions the menu will be displayed in blue.

*File/Folder:* A file or a folder is to be included.
Under File you can select a file or a folder, if you have
not already done this via Drag & Drop. If you explicitly
want to have a folder, then please clear the filename in
the file selector. You have to input a Menu entry every
time. If possible (with files) a menu entry will already be
suggested. Optionally one can also input a command line
               for files.
In colour resolutions the folder will be displayed in red.

*Separator:* A dotted line seperator will be generated.

*File:* For /file/ and /folder/ types a file selector can be
called up here in which one can select one the folders or
files resepctively. To get a folder, make sure that the
filename in the file selector is empty.

*Menu entry:* Except for the Separator type, one must enter here the
text under which the object should appear.

*Command line:* Here can enter an optional command line.

*File mask:* With folders one can specify a file-mask here that is to
be used when opening a directory window from /Start Me Up!/
(only from /Start Me Up!/ version 1.09 onwards).

SMU-Setup evaluates only the type specific fields in each case. The others
will be ignored.

Corresponding error messages are output for violations of this table.

7.3 Test
========

The alterations to the START.SET-file will be saved, /Start Me Up!/ will be
quit and reloaded with the new START.SET-file. This makes it possible to
observe the results during configuration.

*Attention:* Since version 0.65 this only saves START.SET temporarily, i.e.
this function only displays the provisional and not the permanent settings.
It is therefore necessary to save the START.SET if the settings are to be
used permanently. However, you can revert to the former mode by
simultaneously pressing the [ALTERNATE] key.

7.4 Delete
==========

With this button you can delete all selected objects on the current level.

7.5 Copy/Insert
===============

SMU-Setup has its own Copy/Paste-buffer for clipboard functions. Depending
on the relevant button label, entries can either be copied to the clipboard
('Copy') or inserted in the list ('Insert'). If the button reads 'Insert',
the clipboard buffer can be cleared with a single click of the right mouse
button.

7.6 Flags
=========

Version 1.12 of /Start Me Up!/ offers 28 flags for configuring its
appearance and operation. These can be set and edited here.

The main part of the dialogue conists of a list of flags that one can
scroll through with the slider at the right border. The small boxes in
front of the descriptive text activate (crossed) or deactivate the
corresponding flag.

An asterisk ('*') before the descriptive text indicates that one or more
parameters are expected for the entry. These can be edited following a
single mouse click on the corresponding field.

The flags correspond individually to the following switches in SMU:

Table 3: Explanation of the flags

The following flags expect a parameter that can be input with a simple
mouse click on the asterisked legend:

*Display as desktop:* With the /DesktopColor/ popup one can set
                            the background colour.
With the /Desktop fill/ popup one can select
the fill pattern for the desktop.
You can see the result in the lower field.
With the /Activ/ switch you can activate this
                            optional parameter.

*Specify Shutdown program:* Brings up a file selector where you have to
specify the path and name of the Shutdown
                            program.

*Use custom resource file:* Clicking on the /Resource file/ field brings
up a file selector where you can select the
path and name of the resource file to be used.
In the /Index/ field enter the number of the
                            object that the popup selects.

*Display/Selection delay:* Enter the desired value in milliseconds.

*Samples:* A file selector appears in which you can
                            select the desired sample.

*Set drive designations:* Select the letters of the partitions in the
columns below "/nolabel" whose name should not
or could not be ascertained. In the adjacent
input fields you can assign alternative drive
names, which have a higher priority to those
selected below "/nolabel", i.e. if you place a
name next to a selected drive the "/nolabel"
will be ignored. If the field is empty and the
drive is also not selected, /Start Me Up!/
                            will use the system name.

*Create log-file:* A file selector appears in which you can
input the desired name and path for the
                            log-file.

7.7 Time-start
==============

In the time-start manager you can specify, alter and remove the
time-start files.

For this, you will see in the window all currently active time-start files
with the time they are to be started at and their path information. You
can select or deselect one or more files with the left mouse button. Any
selected files can be deleted with the *Remove* button. Note that there is
no safety query for this!

With *Copy* the selected files are copied to a buffer, and with *Insert*
the buffer will be inserted into the time-start table.

A new time-start file can be created by clicking on *Add*. A dialogue
appears in which you can input all the data for the file.

This dialogue has three input fields:

*File:* A double-click brings up a file selector, where you can
select the file to be started. This input is mandatory.

*Command line:* is an optional parameter that can be passed to the file
                to be started.

*Start time:* is the time at which the file should be executed. This
                 input is mandatory.

7.8 Options
===========

Here you can set and save various options of SMU-Setup.

*Fileselector at program start* forces a file selector to *always* appear
at the program start to locate the START.SET file.

*Convert long filenames to 8+3* converts long filenames - if present -
to their DOS 8+3 equivalents. This is specially useful with desktops
that do not handle long filenames, or do so only badly (e.g. Thing).
Problems arise with files that include an apostrophe (') in the
filename and are to be inserted via Drag & Drop.

*At loading* coverts all files during loading into their DOS-format.

*START.APP* locates /Start Me Up!/ for the 'Test' function.

*Define standard Setups* defines up to four further START.SETs to be
held simultaneously in memory, which will be loaded automatically at
     program start.

With *Save* all the options will be saved.

7.9 Statistics
==============

Displays some statistics about the loaded START.SET.

7.10 Info
=========

With this button you call up the Copyright dialogue.

7.11 Quit
=========

Ends SMU-Setup.

8 Notes and warnings
********************

SMU-Setup outputs a number of notes and warnings.

*Notes:*

*Could not open dialogue box* A dialogue box could not be opened. The
usual cause is insufficient memory. This error should occur very
    rarely.

*Separators can not be edited* Separators (dotted lines) can not be
edited. Only moving and deleting is possible.

*The key input was correct :-) Thanks for the registration* This message
shows that you have input the correct key. SMU-Setup is then a full
    registered version (see "Registration").

*Sorry, incorrect key was input :-(* The entered key was not correct.
The program will not be registered (see "Registration").

*Warnings:*

*Faulty START.SET! (Please correct it!)* The number of //menu/ and
//endmenu/ entries do not agree. Therefore SMU-Setup cannot interpret
the START.SET properly. Please correct the missing //endmenu/ with an
    ASCII editor.

*Error while reading START.SET* The file START.SET could not be read in.

*Not enough memory available for the desired operation* SMU-Setup needs
    more memory than is available.

*Menu entry line is empty* When creating a new menu, the 'Menu entry:'
field must be filled in. This did not happen.

*No file has been selected* When creating a new file the 'File:' field
must be clicked on and a file or folder selected in the file selector.

*ST-GUIDE not found* The ST-GUIDE program was neither registered as an
ACC nor could be found under the environment variable STGUIDE.

*No Help is available at present. Sorry!* You are currently not in a
window dialogue. Therefore online help cannot be called via ST-Guide.

*Memory overflow* SMUSETUP attempted to reserve memory dynamically for
further entries, but this was not possible.
If this error occurs, please save the START.SET and restart SMU-Setup.

*The start time was not specified* You have not entered the start-time
    while editing a time-start file.

*The start time is invalid* You have specified an invalid start time.

B Future plans
**************

The following features are planned for the future:

  The /alias function of /Start Me Up!/ from version 1.10 of 19.07.1996
onwards is supported insufficiently (the aliases are replaced directly
during loading of SMU-Setup). In future the aliases should remain and
   even be used "intelligently".

C Known problems
****************

Drag & Drop with MagXDesk: The top window receives a mouse key message
from MagXDesk that it should be moved.
*Remedy:* Press the right mouse button.

At the same time however the *Add* dialogue appears as a modal dialogue.
*Remedy for both problems:* Simply hold down both mouse buttons during
   the Drag & Drop process.

D Legal

This program has been thoroughly tested, but nevertheless I can accept no
guarantees for possible damage to soft-and hardware.

English versions of the documentation and executable by PW of TransAction.

TransAction is the world's first translation crew! We reckoned if demo
coders can get together in crews so can we. We take the best software
around and work with the authors to bring you English releases. We've all
been translating software for years so we decided it was time to pool our
efforts. Currently we only translate German and French software into
English but if you want to extend the crew get in touch!
