Howard Carson and Lorant Oswald - both of the Toronto Atari Federation - have
taken it upon themselves to do a fairly extensive translation of the
amazing no|Desk replacement desktop. no|Desk is a product of no|Systems,
located in Prm, Germany. The so-called no|Look has been used extensively
in many of the newest, popular Atari programs - That's Write 3 and 4, for
example.

The INSTALL.TXT, CONFFILE.TXT and REGISTER.TXT have also been translated, so
that although you won't have a full manual for this demo version of no|Desk,
you'll still be able to get started comfortably. no|Desk will disable itself
after approximately 2 months of use - ample time to decide whether or not it
isn't the most interesting replacement desktop ever to come down the pike for
Atari computer users.

Virtually all of the Pop-Up Menus (and there are a *lot* of them) have been
translated; virtually all of the Drop-Down Menus (there are only a few of them)
have been translated, and many of the Dialogue and Error Boxes have been
translated. As well, all of the Utility Programs (they can be found in the UTP
Folder, and carry the .UTP extension) have been translated. Because of the nature
of this sort of translation very few of the hinted keyboard shortcuts are
visually accurate - you still have to use the <Control> or <Alternate> key,
with the letters indicated in the menu sidebars.

To get started quickly with no|Desk, put the file NOSYSTEM.PRG in your Auto
Folder, and place the NODESK and NOSYS Folders on your 'C' drive. Re-boot, and
when you get to the GEM desktop, open up the NODESK Folder and doubleclick on
NODESK.PRG. no|Desk will automatically detect your current resolution, and set
up the appropriate desktop - it will save this automatically as well . . . in
specially named sub-folder in the CNF Folder.

Remember one thing . . . RIGHT-CLICK on everything: the menu bar of any window,
a program file, a text file, a resource file, a drive icon, a blank part of the
desktop. Remember that the Menu Bar at the top of the screen is used purely for
configuring the look and feel of no|Desk - everything else is accessed via the
dozen or so Pop-Up Menus. Of course you can double-click normally (with the left
mouse button) to open folders, drives, launch programs, etc., . . . but the
Pop-Ups give you the opportunity to do all sorts of things at the desktop level,
and window level.

Remember the RIGHT mouse button; click on absolutely everything (also try the
HELP key alone and in combination with the <CONTROL> and <ALTERNATE> and
<SHIFT> keys. Ignore the top menu bar, unless you want to configure something.

no|Desk also defaults to just a couple of drive icons when it first launches.
So if you always want all your drive icons to show up each time you boot, go to
the top menu bar, click once on the ALL DRIVES entry in the OPTIONS menu, and
all your drives will appear. Then go to the FILE menu and click once on SAVE ALL.
You'll wind up in the CNF folder, with the file selector displaying a particular
DESK.NDS file. Click on OK to save your setup . . . and you're done!

no|Desk is amazingly configurable, has the annoying habit of opening windows
right on top of other ones (until you get used to picking a position via the
right mouse button pop-up, that is!), makes use of Kobold (if you have it), has
an excellent built in PI3, IMG and ASCII file viewer, pulls text (and other files)
out of ZIP, LZH, ARC and ZOO archives one at a time (right from the desktop!),
and multitasks beautifully with MultiTOS and MagiC, makes use of
extensive Aliasing (if you want) . . . no|Desk contains an
absolutely incredible number of useful features.

*Please* read the translated TXT files. Have fun!!

NB: According to Jrg Zabell (the PR guy at no|Systems), a Swedish(?) team is
working on a *full* english translation. We hope they've incorporated some
of the idiom used in our translation - as was indicated in a letter to us,
after we registered no|Desk and asked permission to upload this translated
demo version. The point is, the authorized translation of the *registered*
version of no|Desk is only a couple of weeks away! Currently, registering
no|Desk will get you a new NODESK.OVL file: you delete the NODESK.PRG and
NODEKS.OVL files that came with the demo, rename the huge, new NODESK.OVL
    file to NODESK.PRG . . . and you're ready to go . . . in German - except
for the self activating UTP (Utility Programs), and some of the Pop-Ups
which are activated out of the NODESK.NDD file.

So check with no|Systems before you register. Make sure the english
    *registered* version is shipping!
