How to install noDesk?
----------------------
In order to be able to start noDesk, noSystem has to be installed
in the computer. Those with noSystem already installed can skip Section
1 and go directly to Section 2

1: Installing noSystem
======================
noSystem consists of the following files:
NOSYSTEM.PRG This must go in the Auto folder
NOSYS\*.* This is a Folder where you will find
all of the noSystem files. It is
advisable to put this folder in the
root directory of the boot drive.
After putting those files in the correct places, you must start
NOCONFIG.PRG in the NOSYS folder. In this program you can make
all the necessary settings. If you want you can boot now!

2: Installing noDesk
====================
This is quite simple. Copy the noDesk folder to wherever you
want (preferably to the C:\).
What follows after, depends on whether or not you have a
multi-tasking system.

     Operating noDesk under TOS
     --------------------------
In this case, simply start NODESK.PRG to get your new desktop.

     Multi-tasking Operating Systems
     -------------------------------
noDesk currently supports MultiTOS and Mag!X 2.0. Under these
operating systems you must not start NODESK.PRG, but rather
NODESK.OVL. Both operating system variations offer the
possiblity of noDesk as the default desktop. And that's also
what you should do! Under MULTITOS this can be configured
in GEM.CNF where the 'shell' entry must be NODESK.OVL (for
example: shell C:\NODESK\NODESK.OVL)

Anything further that is important about multi-tasking systems
is noted elsewhere in this text.

After these minor tasks have been completed and you're looking at the
noDesk screen, you should press HELP first - a POPUP menu appears
where you can select the text/documentation file that you want to
read. In order to understand noDesk you should read these files
(they are in the NODESK\NDSYS\*.TXT), however studying OBKECTE.TXT
and CLI.TXT is not absolutely necessary for everyday operation.
In the following text we assume you have read or at least looked
through NODESK.TXT and UTP.TXT.

Now you should study the noDesk Menu Bar (the menu items
'Options', 'Tools') and make the desired individual changes to
settings. After setting 'Standard Settings' under the 'Options'
menu please don't forget to save them by clicking on 'Save All'
under the 'File' menu.

Unfortunately we have not managed to include some sample
configurations although these will definitely be included later,
in the same form that is currently in the CNF folder, (except
that they will be named, eg: 'ATARI.CNF', which means that this
configuration would imitate an original Atari desktop [how
sensible - isn't it?]).
There are two different ways to access the different
configurations:

1: Using noDesk in single-user mode, you need to rename
your current 'CNF' folder to, eg: 'CNF.OLD' and rename the above
mentioned 'ATARI.CNF' to 'CNF'.
2: Using noDesk in multi-user mode, you can set up a new
user (with MULTIMAN.UTP - on the menu bar), that will have this
new 'ATARI.CNF' as its home path. Then you can logon as user
'atari' if you want to use this configuration.

Installing the Multi-User system
--------------------------------
In multi-user operating mode the password configuration file
contains all the user names, user passwords and user home paths,
each of which contains the personal user configurations and
attributes which the user prefers for noDesk. A System
Administrator can easily set up and maintain this password
file using 'MULTIMAN.UTP' (see UTP.TXT). In order to use the multi
user mode in noDesk you must start NODESK_M.PRG as NODESK.PRG
(This is not true under multi-tasking systems! In this case,
noDesk will be started in mulit-user mode if there is a PASSWD
file in NDSYS folder). In order to change users during operation,
there is a command 'login' (which also exists as a menu entry).

All individual configuration files (*.NDD, *.NDI, *.NDS, etc.)
must be placed in the appropriate user home path, in the CNF
folder. The globally accessible noDesk files such as UTPs, shell
programs to show pictures and archives, and general *.NDD,
reside wherever NODESK.PRG is started in the appropriate
subfolders/subdirectories.
The internal variable 'HOME (or ~), contains the home path of
a particular user, wherein the initial script file DESK.NDS must
reside. If you want to maintain a list of all users (eg: to set
up new users) you must logon using 'SysAdmin' in MULTIMAN.UTP
(please use 'ratte666' as the initial password and then change
it immediately).

We suggest the following Folder Tree structure for multiple users:
------------------------------------------------------------------

     USR\ Folder for noDesk users
ANDI\ Folder for noDesk user 'Andi' ($HOME)
             DESK.NDS
             CNF\
                GLOBALS.NDS
                NODESK.NDI
                NODESK.NDQ
                NODESK.NDD
                ND_ICONS.RSC
                MENU\
                    MENU.RSC
                640X480.16\ Desktop 640x480x16 colours

                GLOBALS.NDS

                640X400.2\ Desktop 640x400x2 colours
                    DESK.NDS
                    INIT.NDS
                . Desktop ???x???x?? colours
                .
                .
?????\ Folder for further noDesk users
          .
          .
          .

It doesn't really matter where the top folder 'USR' is placed -
you only have to enterthe appropriate paths for individual
users, in multiman.utp. When you place these folders in the
NODESK folder, it becomes possbile to assign relative home paths
(eg: USR\STAMMI).
